New Research Shows EVs Provide 'Best Value'

February 20th 2019

A new study has found that EVs are already having less impact on UK owners’ bank balances than petrol or diesel vehicles.

The research, which was based on the VW Golf, examined the purchase, fuel and tax costs of the vehicle in its battery electric, hybrid, petrol and diesel forms.

As a result of lower taxes, fuel costs and subsidies on the purchase price, the pure electric version proved the cheapest.

Researchers from the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT) also told the Guardian newspaper that their report showed tax breaks are a vital way to push the rollout of EVs.

Previous studies by other groups have agreed with the view that EVs are the most economical, as electricity is cheaper than petrol or diesel. EV owners also benefit from reduced parking and road toll charges.

In 2018 alone, sales of new EVs in the UK rose by 21% - while diesel car sales plummeted by 30%.
