Making it all happen: The R&D team keeping us plugged in to EV innovation. BLOG EV Charging Making it all happen: The R&D team keeping us plugged in to EV innovation. Chloe Sharp 6 January 2026 at 12:50:07 In January last year, we started enquiring about opening our very own research and development centre in Nottingham University Science Park. Ian Griffiths, Technical Director at Rolec Services, talks about this process. “Given the fast pace of innovation and regulatory change within the EV industry,” developing a dedicated site for renewed growth was paramount and exploring the future of EV in-house “has placed Rolec in a strong position to weather disruptions in global trade, capture the best talent, and react quickly to new market opportunities.” Something that has already proved its value to us tenfold. Specifically with the introduction of the Smart Charge Point regulations in June 2022. As the UK government set out to make charge points more user-friendly and intuitive, the rest of the world was in the midst of a component shortage, impacted in part by the war in Ukraine. Leaving the EV industry bottlenecked. So… whilst everyone was looking globally to find a solution, we stayed closer to home. Taking on the undertaking of designing our own EV Controller and Smart Communications Module and investing in a British manufacturer to help turn these ideas into reality. But let’s take a step back for a minute and really focus on the process, from deciding we want to create our own components to bespoke circuit boards fitted into each and every unit that leaves our factory. Set against a backdrop of “geopolitical movement and global component constraints,” the team began researching (and developing…) a solution. Creating something that would bridge the gap between chargepoint and user. In a nutshell, it means you can communicate with your unit via app, schedule charging for off-peak hours and have full transparency over your energy usage. Communication is then also available between the charge point and your house to facilitate dynamic load balancing, which monitors electricity usage on your home circuit and downgrades accordingly. With this all worked out, all that was left was to turn concept into product. And for this, it was important to us to work with a team that maintained our standards and aligned with our values as British manufacturers. On top of that, they also had to work reflexively with our R&D team and have the capacity to manufacture to meet demand. You could say we were looking for someone who could give us Smart Made Simple… and SMS, “who facilitate rapid prototyping and volume manufacture,” immediately showed up on our radar. We’ve been working with SMS for a year now and ever since it’s been the perfect match. Our R&D team “has worked closely alongside SMS to ensure our new Smart charging technology is designed for manufacture to the highest quality standards.” PREVIOUS NEXT Related Posts The QUBEV just got smarter New Smart Charge Point Regulations A Housing Developer's Guide to the Part S Regulations

Rising Energy Prices Are Challenging Campsites This Summer BLOG Caravan Hook-Ups Rising Energy Prices Are Challenging Campsites This Summer 6 January 2026 at 12:50:07 With the UK energy price cap rising again, campsite operators are facing a costly dilemma. For ease, many sites have decided to bundle electricity into their pitch fees, offering guests the convenience of “all-in” pricing. But this summer, that convenience could come at a painful cost. The Problem: Electricity is Getting Expensive — Fast The latest hike in the energy price cap means that operators who don’t charge guests separately for electricity are now at further risk of losing money. As air fryers, electric heaters, EV chargers and more become common at pitches, guest consumption is becoming both unpredictable and expensive to subsidise. For parks already dealing with tight margins and post-COVID recovery, this is a storm they can’t afford to weather blindly. The Solution: Pay-As-You-Go Pricing Many forward-thinking sites are switching to a combined hardware and software solution designed specifically for the leisure industry. Whether it’s a busy holiday resort or a countryside caravan park, Rolec and Metpow have you covered from all directions - ensuring guests pay only for what they use, and site owners never have to guess, estimate, or absorb the cost of rising usage. With Rolec & Metpow: • Guests pay for their own energy usage through a simple self-serve app • Operators maintain full control over energy supply and pricing, including peak and off-peak tariffs • Real-time insights allow for smarter management and better guest experience • Guests can have peace of mind knowing all energy usage is accurately reported by MID approved hardware • No more guesswork — each stay is individually metered and fairly billed Trusted by Leading Sites From independent parks to large-scale destinations, Rolec has proven themselves time and time again as leaders in the electrical industry. Now paired with Metpow’s cloud-based platform, they are transforming utility management across the UK leisure sector. Operating via Rolec’s tried and tested hardware, Metpow uses secure wireless connectivity to give you live consumption data, remote control, and automated billing — all from your phone or computer. Heading Into Summer, Don’t Leave Profits to Chance The 2025 summer season is shaping up to be one of the busiest yet — but also one of the most expensive if electricity isn’t managed properly. If you’re still bundling electricity into pitch fees, now is the time to make the switch. As more leisure parks move away from bundling electricity and water into accommodation packages, it's essential to plan for accurate utility metering, transparent pricing, and modern billing systems. This transition supports fairer charging, encourages responsible resource use, and aligns with sustainability goals. A Rolec and Metpow network lets you protect your bottom line, enhance your guest experience, and take control of energy costs — just in time for the holiday season. • New Building Regulations Set to Make EV Chargers a Part of the Furniture

New Building Regulations Set to Make EV Chargers a Part of the Furniture NEWS EV Charging New Building Regulations Set to Make EV Chargers a Part of the Furniture Chloe Sharp 6 January 2026 at 12:50:07 Why is the government introducing these regulations? It is not new to suggest that more needs to be done to tackle the current climate emergency. The push for rapid decarbonisation can be felt throughout the UK and expands far into the world. Something that many national leaders are trying to tackle through the execution of legislative and regulatory changes. One of the newest to be implemented in the UK being the Part S regulation. This new regulation specifically aims to tackle the problem of electric vehicle infrastructure we currently have in the UK. Highlighted as one of the greatest problems facing the adoption of electric vehicles, many people have stated increased range anxiety and the inaccessibility of EV charge points as one of their main deterrents against taking the plunge into emission-free transport. What does this mean for residential property developers? To ease some of these fears, the Part S regulation makes it mandatory for all new build properties to provide an electric vehicle (EV) charge point for potential residents. It also applies to residential properties undergoing major renovations (that will have more than 10 parking spaces upon completion). Tasking developers to deliver at least one EV charge point per residence as well as the supporting infrastructure to sustain the installation of future charge points . Installing cable routes to all remaining spaces. In terms of how successful this is in achieving its aims, it is definitely set to increase the accessibility of EV chargers domestically. And measures have been taken to future-proof these developments via cable installation. Hopefully encouraging an uptake in purchases of new electric vehicles. But, since 80% of EV owners already charge their cars at home over night, what does this mean for the day? Regulations for new non-residential properties. This brings us to the provisions for non-residential buildings . Like those above, if the building is set to have more than 10 parking spaces , one space must have access to an EV charge point . Cable routes also need to be installed in a minimum of 20% of remaining spaces . If the parking spaces are in a covered garage, consider uncovered spaces first or (if all are covered) cable routes must be installed in 1/5 of spaces. In terms of buildings undergoing renovations, cost of installing charge points and cable routes should not equal more than 7% of the cost of the total renovation . The addition of this provision is promising as it sets in motion the groundwork for expansion. As well as aiming to tackle the problem faced by many current and prospective EV drivers, of the public lack of infrastructure. Whether this is enough to convince people to make the switch is yet to be seen but hopefully by dipping their toes into the world of EV charging, businesses will be encouraged to join the pledge for a greener future.
