- The UK EV Charging Regulations 2024: A Guide
The UK EV Charging Regulations 2024: A Guide BLOG EV Charging The UK EV Charging Regulations 2024: A Guide 6 January 2026 at 12:50:07 In this blog, we’ll cover the key aspects of the UK EV charging regulations and the new requirements for public chargepoint owners and operators. Effective 24 November 2024 , the UK Government introduced new regulations for electric vehicle (EV) charging to enhance transparency, reliability, and accessibility at public chargepoints. These changes are part of a broader effort to support the transition to electric vehicles and help the UK meet its climate goals. The aim is to make the EV driving experience easier, more convenient, and more reassuring. The regulations apply to public-facing chargepoints in public or private car parks and along public roads, but not to workplace or exclusive-use chargepoints. With the UK’s target of reaching Net Zero by 2030, improving charging infrastructure is key to encouraging more drivers to switch to electric, reducing the carbon footprint, and supporting long-term sustainability. Contactless Payment: One of the standout updates is the mandate for contactless payments at public chargepoints. All new public chargepoints above 8kW and existing chargepoints above 50kW must offer contactless payment options, including debit/credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and more , ensuring drivers can charge their vehicles quickly and without needing to sign up for an account. Rolec's strategic partnership with PAYTER allows us to offer simplified payment solutions that adhere to the latest industry regulations, ensuring our solutions are fully compliant. By integrating PAYTER’s contactless payment technology with Rolec’s hardware, we are improving both functionality and flexibility for EV drivers and businesses alike. This integration allows public chargepoint operators increase charger utilisation, enhance the driver experience, and future-proof their infrastructure. Reliability & Uptime Standards: Rapid charge points of 50kW and above must maintain a 99% reliability rate, meaning they must be operational and available for use 99% of the time. The chargepoint status, whether ‘available,’ ‘charging,’ or ‘reserved,’ as well as non-functioning charge points, will impact the reliability score. Transparent Pricing : Chargepoint operators (CPOs) must display the maximum charging price in pence per kilowatt-hour (p/kWh) either directly on the chargepoint or via an accessible platform, such as a landing page or on-site sign. Prices shown only in apps will no longer be acceptable, as this limits drivers’ ability to make informed decisions. 24/7 Support Helpline: CPOs must provide round-the-clock support for drivers using public chargepoints. This includes a free 24/7 staffed helpline to assist with issues related to charging, payment, technical problems, or other concerns. Contact details must be easily accessible on or near the chargepoint. Additionally, CPOs are responsible for submitting reports detailing the volume of calls, reasons for calls, and how quickly issues were resolved. Open Data Access : Chargepoint operators are required to maintain and share open data about their chargepoint locations, availability, connector types, payment methods, and pricing in a machine-readable format. Roaming Agreements : By late 2025, all chargepoint operators must allow payments through at least one roaming provider, enabling EV drivers to use multiple charging networks via a single app or RFID card for a seamless experience. With fines of up to £10,000 for non-compliant chargers, public CPOs need to ask themselves, 'Are we ready?' The UK EV Charging Regulations bring both challenges and opportunities for CPOs. With the regulations already in effect, it's crucial to make the necessary changes and upgrades to avoid penalties. Talk to us for expert advice on staying compliant and see how Rolec can help you navigate regulations smoothly. So, What Does This Mean for Drivers? These new regulations bring a host of benefits for drivers. Clear pricing will help you know the exact cost to charge your EV, making it easier to plan your journeys and manage costs. The 24/7 helpline ensures support is always available if anything goes wrong. The rules also promote high uptime and easy access to chargepoint availability data. Contactless payment simplifies the charging process, while roaming agreements (coming by late 2025) will allow drivers to use multiple networks through a single app or RFID card, without being locked into one operator. Overall, these changes aim to make the EV charging experience even smoother, helping more drivers switch to electric and we're here for it! - When Space Matters Most, Rolec’s New HEX Charger Prioritises It Like No Other
When Space Matters Most, Rolec’s New HEX Charger Prioritises It Like No Other NEWS EV Charging When Space Matters Most, Rolec’s New HEX Charger Prioritises It Like No Other 6 January 2026 at 12:50:07 Hot off the launch of their expanded DC range, Rolec announces a major addition to their commercial AC portfolio – introducing HEX. Drawing on nearly two decades of experience in the EV charging industry, UK manufacturing leader Rolec has created a brand-new unit to meet the growing demands of businesses and organisations across the globe. Developed and manufactured in the UK, HEX is the latest and most intelligent electric vehicle charging pedestal on the market; a distinctive new offering that prioritises space like no other. Its unique and innovative quad-outlet design is ideal for centrally located parking bays, reducing groundwork and installation requirements while maximising charging availability for EV drivers. Constructed of robust steel and created with a small footprint, HEX is purpose-built for commercial, workplace, and public charging environments. The same attention to design continues internally: effortless OCPP integration, optional plug & go, and a choice of 2 or 4-way 22kW charging makes for a fully configurable and seamless solution. Payment flexibility is also a key feature. With options for RFID, pay-to-charge, and a single contactless payment terminal that can serve all four sockets. An optional 5” LCD screen displays real-time charging status, while built-in MID-approved energy metering provides accurate consumption reporting, essential for sites looking to recover costs or generate profit. Compatible with Rolec’s 40+ CPMS partners, a smart back-office platform enables operators to set custom tariffs and unlock new revenue streams. HEX is installer-friendly too. It offers easy access from both sides, includes a lockable internal access door as standard, supports split phase supply, and is engineered with compactness and deployment efficiency in mind. Additional features include small, diffused LED amenity lighting for accessibility in low-light locations. The unit also conforms to the PAS 1899 accessible charging standard, delivering EV charging for all users. HEX is not only a smart choice for infrastructure, but also a smart choice for funding. Eligible for 4 separate government grants, its four-socket design provides excellent value and investment potential for businesses, local authorities, and destination venues. Frankie Mellon, Managing Director at Rolec, had this to say; “HEX represents the next natural step forward in Rolec’s product evolution. Robust, powerful, and packed with the latest features – it’s the pinnacle of what customers have come to expect from our commercial range. Reflecting Rolec’s ongoing commitment to delivering flexible, cost-efficient, and future-focused solutions that meet the growing needs of sustainable transport and public infrastructure. We’ve launched this unit specifically to meet the requirements of demanding, high-use environments to provide reliable, simultaneous charging for up to four vehicles from one compact pedestal, reducing the need for large scale installation. All of which is supported by dynamic load balancing and power distribution optimised across all sockets. HEX combines advanced functionality and visibility through real-time status displays, with exceptional performance, designed to maximise user experience, ROI, flexibility, and scalability. It’s adaptable to the requirements of your site, through optional and varied payment methods that support hassle-free transactions.” Available now for pre-order. - UK Government Backs Fleets with £30M EV Charging Infrastructure Fund
UK Government Backs Fleets with £30M EV Charging Infrastructure Fund NEWS EV Charging UK Government Backs Fleets with £30M EV Charging Infrastructure Fund 6 January 2026 at 12:50:07 As the UK accelerates its push toward zero-emission transport, the government has released a £30 million fund to help fleet operators install electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at depots. What Is the Depot Charging Scheme? The Depot Charging Scheme, funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) and managed by the Government Grants Management Service (GGMS), will reimburse eligible fleet operators for up to 75% of the costs associated with installing EV charging infrastructure. A total of £30 million is available, with a maximum grant of £1 million per applicant, which can be spread across multiple sites. What Is Covered In The Scheme? The scheme covers the purchase of EV chargepoints tailored to your fleet’s specific requirements, as well as labour and materials required for installation and connection. This includes civil engineering work, electrical components, and contractor services. However, costs related to electric vehicles themselves, and grid connection charges are excluded. For full details on eligible and ineligible expenses, visit the official the government website . Who Can Apply? To qualify for the grant, applicants must meet the following criteria: Registered Fleet Operator: Must be a registered fleet operator operating in the UK for at least one year before application date. Depot Ownership or Consent: Need to own the depot(s) where the installation of the units want to be or have written consent from the landlord to install the infrastructure at the specified site(s). Fleet Requirements: Own, lease, or have ordered at least one battery electric van, heavy goods vehicle (HGV), or coach as part of your fleet. Installation Deadline: Be able to complete the installation of charging points by 31 March 2026. Grid Capacity: The depot(s) must have sufficient grid capacity to support EV charging by 31 March 2026. Proof of Eligibility: Provide evidence that requirements above are met, as outlined in the scheme’s supporting information. Senior Leadership Approval: A senior leader within your organisation must have signed off on your infrastructure installation proposal. There are no limits on the number of depot sites that can be included in the application, provided all sites meet the eligibility criteria and are covered under the same application. Application closing date: 28th of November 2025, 4pm Opportunities for Installers While the scheme targets fleet operators, it opens significant opportunities for EV installers across the UK. Unlike previous schemes, there is no central list of approved contractors. Installers can directly engage with applicants and compete to secure funded projects. With £30 million available on a first-come, first-served basis, and applications requiring detailed, costed proposals, installers who respond quickly with accurate quotes will greatly improve their chances of winning business. The deadline for completed installations is 31 March 2026, making efficient project management and resource allocation essential - especially for complex or multi-site projects. Installers with proven experience in meeting tight deadlines, handling grid upgrade requirements, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders will stand out. Additionally, the scheme encourages depot sharing to maximise value for money, which creates further opportunity for installers offering flexible hardware and software solutions. Installers can gain insights by engaging with scheme delivery partners like Cenex and the Energy Saving Trust. These organisations often provide guidance on cost benchmarks, technical best practices, and evaluation criteria. Being fluent in these expectations allows installers to align proposals more closely with what assessors are looking for, making them more appealing to fleet operators seeking funding approval.
