  • Sustainability Rooted in Practice, Not PR

Sustainability Rooted in Practice, Not PR BLOG Marina Sustainability Rooted in Practice, Not PR 6 January 2026 at 12:50:07 Sustainability is not a trend, a one-off project, or a problem to be ‘solved.’ For Rolec and other businesses in the marina sector, it is a mindset and an ongoing commitment that combines ethical responsibility with practical business sense. Done properly, it is about anchoring changes that last, not simply ticking boxes. We all know that the marina sector is closely tied to nature. Coastal and inland waters are delicate ecosystems, and those who manage, operate, and develop marinas cannot ignore their duty to protect and preserve. Visitors increasingly expect clean energy, waste reduction, and sustainable infrastructure and not as optional extras. The challenge is not whether we can afford to act, but whether we can afford not to. A Longstanding Commitment Long before ‘sustainability’ became a boardroom talking point, Rolec was already taking steps that aligned with environmental stewardship. At the time, many of these decisions weren’t branded as such, we simply viewed them as good practice. Using local supply chains reduced unnecessary transport miles and supported regional economies. Engineering products for durability meant fewer replacements, lower material usage, and extended product life cycles. Minimising waste was about efficiency and diligence. These principles were quietly embedded into the company’s operations long before they became part of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) checklists. At Rolec, sustainability has always been about consciously building for the future. The decisions we make in design, sourcing, and manufacturing directly affect our customers, our industry, and the generations that follow. That philosophy has only been reinforced by the achievement of ISO 14001:2015 certification, which formalised our environmental management systems and gave further structure to our ongoing efforts. The Strength of Manufacturing Control As UK manufacturers, we maintain full control over the build and development of our core product range. This visibility across the entire life cycle, from concept to creation, delivery, and ongoing maintenance, which gives us opportunities to implement positive innovations at every stage. For example, by upgrading our solar array and reducing our consumption of heating oil across the site, we generated an estimated annual CO₂e saving of 76,410kg. Alongside this, battery storage was introduced to capture excess solar energy, which now helps to power our factory and charge electric vehicles without drawing from the grid. These steps not only reduced emissions but also improved our energy resilience, something many marinas are equally striving to achieve as energy prices fluctuate and sustainability targets tighten. Similarly, by reducing the size of our packaging, we are now able to ship 50% more products per pallet. This has cut transport-related emissions by 33% and lowered logistical costs, a benefit both to our own operations and to operators’ conscious of supply chain impact. At the same time, we ensured all materials used in preparing products for shipping are FSC-certified and 100% recyclable. A switch to water-based inks further reduced our carbon footprint by nearly 40%. These measures may sound incremental, but collectively they demonstrate how small, thoughtful decisions build towards meaningful results. Closing the Loop Waste is another area where continuous improvement has delivered change. At present, 70% of our manufacturing refuse is diverted to recycling facilities. On its own, that would be a positive step. But by also converting the remaining 30% of waste material into SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel), we avoid sending anything to landfill. This approach reduces environmental burden while supporting a circular economy one where raw materials are continuously repurposed. For the marina sector, the concept of circularity has particular resonance. Marinas generate waste ranging from packaging and plastics to maintenance residues, and every site has a role to play in ensuring these materials are handled with care. ESG Beyond Compliance Today, ESG factors dominate the conversation around a green future. But the real test is ensuring these commitments go beyond compliance. ESG for show does nothing to serve the long-term interests of businesses, communities, or natural environments. For marinas, ESG must be genuine and measurable. Coastal protection, biodiversity, energy efficiency, and the experience of berth holders all intersect in ways that cannot be managed through surface-level initiatives. Customers are discerning, and regulators are watching. The businesses that will thrive are those that view ESG not as a hurdle, but as an opportunity to enhance operations and secure resilience. Our role as manufacturers is to align our processes and supply chains with these long-term goals. That means designing durable products, reducing emissions, managing waste ethically, and providing infrastructure that helps marinas meet their own sustainability goals. Looking Ahead No single company can claim to have ‘solved’ sustainability. The nature of the challenge is that it demands constant progress, adaptation, and shared responsibility. At Rolec, we know that real impact comes from working together. By collaborating across our group of companies, we combine expertise to deliver holistic solutions, helping marinas achieve more with energy management, solar initiatives, measured resource consumption, and long-term strategic development. As Holly Brown, Rolec’s Commercial Director put it: ‘Our vision is not about trend-chasing. It’s about doing what’s right, because we always have, and because we always will.’ That’s why we see our sustainability efforts not as a finite project but as an ongoing process. Each year brings new opportunities to reimagine, refine, reduce, and renew, and the marina sector is on the same journey. The real measure is not in what we say, but in what we do. Only by prioritising substance over image can we ensure that progress is genuine and lasting—rooted in practice, not publicity. • NEW: BerthVend, a cloud-based berth services management system for marinas across the world

NEW: BerthVend, a cloud-based berth services management system for marinas across the world NEWS Marina Services NEW: BerthVend, a cloud-based berth services management system for marinas across the world 6 January 2026 at 12:50:07 Global leaders in marina services equipment, Rolec have launched their new cloud-based marina services management system, BerthVend, providing a streamlined service provision for both marina operators and berth holders. The marina landscape is changing; modern technologies and developments are providing marina and waterfront destinations with endless opportunities whilst decreasing manual labour, time and costs. Rolec have always been pioneers in introducing new and emerging technologies to the marina industry and this time, they have launched BerthVend, a completely cloud-based berth management system, enabling marina operators to control their electric and water services anytime, anywhere, on any device. BerthVend is an updated marina services management system compared to previous systems supplied by Rolec. Whether it’s a marina office computer, a tablet or a smartphone, marina operators are able to manage their services either in their office, or whilst on the marina destination itself. For marina operators, BerthVend brings a plethora of features to provide simple and straightforward operations to their working day. With its modern interactive dashboard which presents a visual of the marina’s layout, as well as the number of berths occupied; berths available and the status of the berth status, marina operators can clearly understand their berths’ activity. Marina operators can benefit from the following: individual electric and water meter readings directly to the marina office; remotely switching sockets and taps on/off; authority to implement own tariffs; manage user accounts; exportable data; remote firmware updates; reservation of utilities; visibility of overall site electric and water consumption; assign services to boat name; pre-pay and post-pay options; billing and payment chasing, as well as easy flotilla/charter billing. What’s more, when opting for BerthVend, marina operators can reap the benefits of implementing a future-proof and scalable marina services management system that enables them to increase their hardware (marina service pedestals) as and when required. API integration of booking systems, accounting and ERP applications also provides marina and waterfront destinations with an all-in-one system, providing ease of daily operations for marina operators. RFID cards/fobs can also be allocated to berth holders, again for a seamless service provision. One particular advancement is BerthVend’s Customer Dock - a self-service portal which enables berth holders to independently switch on/off their assigned services via their smartphone/tablet; a feature that is ideal for marinas that desire to retain the payment management of services used by berth holders, providing them with control over their incoming finances associated with the marina’s services. Berth holders can benefit from numerous features such as: a personal account to make payments via a virtual wallet and obtain transaction history via the BerthVend app; advance reservations of services with marinas; automated in-session low balance alerts via SMS, email or push marketing; outstanding payment reminders; pre-pay and post-pay options; automatic top-up facilities; access to any BerthVend pedestal across the world with the BerthVend app, as well as secure payments via Opayo. Marina and waterfront destinations are able to choose from various packages when it comes to implementing BerthVend, allowing them to opt for the perfect solution to suit their destination’s requirements. With the inclusion of BerthVend’s Customer Dock and the dedicated BerthVend app, destinations can benefit from a truly modern berth services management system that saves time, labour and costs whilst also providing a seamless service provision for berth holders. What does the future look like for BerthVend? The beauty of BerthVend being a cloud-based system means that marina destinations can benefit from over-the-air firmware updates, without the need for engineers to alter the marina service pedestals on-site. As technology evolves, as will BerthVend; some of the potential upcoming features include: contactless payment options; expansion to marina management system, including booking berths via the BerthVend app and bespoke solutions; push marketing to promote the marina’s leisure facilities as well third party partners (restaurants, cinemas, shopping centres) to generate additional revenue; push notifications to boat owners, as well as roaming user account, allowing the use of the user’s virtual wallet across Rolec’s entire smart systems, including VendElectric and PitchVend. • Farnborough International Launches 22kW Quantum EV Charging Pedestals at Major Electric Vehicle Event

CASE STUDY Farnborough International Launches 22kW Quantum EV Charging Pedestals at Major Electric Vehicle Event Farnborough International The home of pioneering spirit, Farnborough International is a hub of innovation for the aerospace and automotive industries. Hosting industry leaders at their 20,000 square metre exhibition and conference centre which welcomed over 183,000 visitors in 2022 with 200,000 projected visitors for 2023. SCOPE Farnborough International is the venue of choice for electric vehicle and home energy show Fully Charged LIVE (FCL) South and as they prepared again to host this year’s event, they wanted to create a charging network for the use of the 26,279 visitors to the show, and all future events. Our 15 years industry experience and extensive industry knowledge meant that it was no surprise when they reached out to Rolec EV to become the official charging partner for the venue. Farnborough International’s primary concern was providing a charging network with the capacity to support charging for the large number of visitors they take in annually. The exhibition centre contains 6 private car parks, with the capacity to provide parking for 3,500 vehicles. Rolec EV liaised with Rob Pidgen, Carlo Zoccali and Ben Gleeson at Farnborough International, who provided us with site plans and highlighted areas that would be best suited to chargepoint installation. ‘During planning and installation stages, the specialist EV team worked closely with the client team to coordinate, plan and manage the installation of the nine new Rolec Quantum EV chargers to bring into service within very tight timescales.’ - Ray Cawte, Farnborough International's Technical Director and Rolec-approved installer. Of the 6 car parks on site, Car Park 4 - where the initial install was projected to take place – Farnborough International wanted to install chargepoints without digging cable routes. We would have to navigate a solution to this, ensuring that the units could have adequate access to power. SOLUTION In preparation for the installation, Rolec's experienced in-house design team produced designs and 3D renders of the bespoke chargers, incorporating the company's brand guidelines meticulously. These designs were then showcased to the Farnborough team, and production promptly commenced the following day. To enable the units in Car Park 4 to have access to power without the need to dig cable trenches, considerations were made for the inclusion of an M40 compression gland to the rear of the pedestal. This would allow for the unit to receive an individual electrical supply without the need for subterranean cable routes. Rolec EV provided all 9 fully branded Quantum pedestals prior to the initial Fully Charged LIVE event. The first 5 pedestals were installed in time for this show, later followed by the remaining 4 pedestals in time for Farnborough International’s ITT Hub event two weeks later, where 4000 visitors were expected to attend. Providing the venue with a total of 18 chargepoints spread out over 2 car parks. The initial chargepoint rollout at Fully Charged LIVE successfully provided visitors with access to 10 chargepoints. The Rolec EV units, powered by Monta, provide visitors with unrivalled visibility of Farnborough International’s charging network, allowing people to book charging in advance of their visit. Monta also initiated the first public trial of their Smart Queue feature at the event, which allowed EV drivers to join a virtual queue and be notified when a chargepoint became available. By utilising this feature Farnborough International were able to optimise the visitor experience and reduce the amount of time people were waiting in their cars to charge. Benefit Rolec EV have provided Farnborough International’s visitors with permanent access to 18 super-fast chargepoints for the purpose of charging their vehicles when visiting any of the venue’s extensive program of events. Over the course of the event, 84 vehicles received charge and 1.115kWh of electricity was supplied to visitors via Rolec EV chargepoints. Generating a total of £666 of additional revenue. Chargepoint access has been provided over 2 car parks, Car Park 1 and Car Park 4. Farnborough International have benefitted from Monta’s sophisticated back-office management solution and has been able to provide their visitors with market-leading functionality as well as opening up a wide range of operational features for the business. Including additional revenue generation, seamless reporting and 24/7 support. “From the proposal to the project management and implementation, our experience working with Rolec has been seamless from start to finish. Offering fast electric car charging points aligns with Farnborough International’s wider sustainability goals and encourages more of our customers to choose eco-friendly transportation options. Our objective was to ensure that our clients and venue attendees who drive electric vehicles have a first-class experience at the venue and we can encourage clients to utilise clean energy for their transportation needs. “At Farnborough International, we are proud to work with like-minded partners who are pioneering sustainable new technologies and innovations.” - Carlo Zoccali, Venue Director at Farnborough International PREVIOUS NEXT Farnborough International
